Finding New Purpose
As many know, we just finished a house for our son, Joseph. It was a work of love that due to some unexpected life events, took much longer than we planned. Thankfully, other than a few finishing touches, it’s now complete.
As we were clearing out the tools and leftover materials for him to move in, he mentioned needing a set of tables. I hated to see him spend any more money. So, I looked around to see what was left over that could be used to make them. There was some butcher block left from trimming down the bar and cutting out the sink hole. It would be just enough for three separate pieces that I edged with some of the oak trim leftover from the cabinets Dad made shortly before he passed away. (Pictured below) I then remembered the bed box spring set that we were getting rid of. I took it apart and used the slats to make the table legs.
As I was putting the polyurethane on the finished tabletops, my mind went to how often we can feel tired, worn out, and not of much use anymore. Some may no longer be able to do things that they once could. If we aren't careful, we'll allow our limitations to keep us from doing things that we enjoy and even worse, miss out on opportunities to do ministry.
All three of the things used to build the tables once had a specific purpose that they were no longer needed for. Each item was on its way to being discarded in the burn pile. With a few adjustments and joined together with one another, the pieces made perfectly functional tables.
When you become discouraged because you can no longer do things that you once could, pick yourself up from the burn pile and find new purpose. It doesn't have to be anything hard. We can minister to others in so many different ways that require very little effort.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. -Matthew 25:35-36
