When the house burned, Mom took Amy and I shopping for new clothes and shoes. Of course, I had to get another pair of BKs, but to my disappointment they no longer had the same ones and I had to choose a different style. I finally settled on a pair that had black quilting on the side (similar to the ones pictured below). They were actually kind of ugly, but that's what everyone else was wearing, so I had to get them. All was good with the world until Amy picked her shoes. You guessed it…she wanted the same pair.
I remember standing in Foot Locker inside Edgewood Mall and begging Mom to make her pick something else. I was a teenager, and it just wasn’t right that my little sister thought she should have the exact same shoes as me. I gave Mom every excuse I could think of as to why it was a bad idea for her to have them. I guess Mom realized just how ridiculous my arguments were because when we left the store... Amy and I had matching shoes. The fact that she ever wanted the same ones as me is pretty comical since we now have totally different tastes.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and that it’s considered a compliment. While I didn’t feel either of those at the time, I should have been proud that my sister wanted to have something the same as mine because it’s those who we think are important that we want to be the most like.
The first part of the book of Ephesians teaches us who God is. It then goes on to teach us how we’re to love and treat others. The verses that sum that up for me are in chapter 5 where it says that we are to be imitators of God.
Do others see Christ in us? After all, He's the only one we should try to impress and the only one worthy of being imitated.
Lord, help me to look more like you.
Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. - Ephesians 5:1-2
