Water Damage 101
Fast forward to the next time I went by to check on the place. Although everything was turned off, as the temps rose and things thawed, the water table rose as well. Water then backed up into the line and seeped inside from a small crack that hadn’t yet been repaired. We were once again cleaning up a mess and now dealing with damage we thought we had avoided.
While cutting out the damaged plywood, I remembered my younger days of working in an insurance office. We would sometimes have water claims that would be denied, depending on the circumstance. The simple explanation is this... If it’s a sudden leak, like a pipe bursting and soaking your carpet...it's covered. If it's gradual, like a leaky faucet rotting your cabinets...it's not. The reason is because the longer you let gradual problems continue, the more damage they can cause that could have been avoided in the first place.
I thought of how this same principle is true in so many aspects of life. When we put small problems on the back burner, they can turn into larger ones if not dealt with in a timely manner. I thought of how "small" sins or even temptations can turn into big issues when we don't repent and turn away from them. A good biblical example of this is found in the book of James when it speaks of temptation leading to sin and then sin leading to death.
Just as the slow small leak caused more damage than the fast-spewing water, sometimes the little things that we don't deal with will eventually do more damage when left unattended.
Lord, show me the things in my life I need to deal with that hinder me spiritually.
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. -James 1:14-15
