Follow Me

I recently started "playing" around on the piano.  I can't read music and I struggle with rhythm, but I can hear the chord changes. So, I thought I would try to at least learn some of them. My main issue was determining whether I should move left or right. With seven octaves on a full-size keyboard, I needed help. My simple answer was to draw arrows above the words to show me which way to go.

When I told a group of church ladies about my unconventional method, one of them said she could see a blog coming about having to follow those arrows. The next time I looked at my make-shift music sheet, I thought about what she had said and the next thing you know...

Wouldn't it be nice if we always had simple instructions drawn out to show us which way to go? This weekend, my friend, Vicki, drew out directions to the campground we were going to, so that we wouldn't get lost pulling our camper. After hearing of our church group getting lost the last time they went there, I was sure happy to have her detailed instructions. Not only did it tell us which way to go, it also included which way NOT to go, lol.

We face decisions every day. Most of the time, they're simple things that we give little thought.  What will I wear? Which route should I take to work? What will I order for lunch or cook for supper? Other times, we face choices that will impact our future or affect the ones we love. These situations require much more thought and prayer. There may even be times when we just aren’t sure which way to turn, and we have to make the best decision with the information we have and hope for the best.

Thankfully, Jesus gives clear, simple instructions for the most important decision we'll ever make.  Follow Me... they're two simple words found around 20 times throughout the Gospels. The word follow has many definitions, but this didn't mean to just trail along behind. It meant to: act according to. To live like Jesus and do as He would do. To follow His ways. Although there may be some bumps in the road along the way, by following the instructions given to us, and staying the course, we're assured that we will ultimately reach our destination.  Eternal life with the Light of the World.

And calling the crowd to Him with His disciples, He said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." -Mark 8:34

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." -John 8:12

"If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also.  If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him." -John 12:26
