Tractor Therapy

One of my favorite places to be is on the tractor or the lawn mower. There aren't many distractions as not much else can be done during this time.  It's difficult to make phone calls or send texts.  There are no bills to pay or household chores to do. Just open green space that needs attention. It's a perfect opportunity to plug in earphones and listen to music or get alone with your thoughts and spend time with God. I jokingly call it "tractor therapy". Some of my best prayer time has been spent smelling fresh cut grass while the sun beams down and the motor hums in the background.

Although God knows everything happening in our lives, He desires for us to spend time alone with Him and communicate our needs to Him. Sadly, when I’ve had a lot going on and probably needed His guidance more than ever, I’ve sometimes failed to prioritize setting aside time with the one who loves me the most.

Do you have a quiet place that you can go to be alone with God? Depending on your family's schedule, this may be difficult for some. Have you looked for opportunities to do so? Driving a long commute, sitting in a deer stand, taking a walk, being stuck in traffic... There are opportunities all around.  We just have to look for them.

The Bible gives several examples of Jesus spending time in prayer, but I think Luke 5 paints a good picture of the importance of stepping away from the busyness to spend time alone with God. Jesus had just performed the miracle of healing the leprous man.  When the news of this spread, crowds came to hear Him and be healed. He could have continued to teach and perform miracles, but it was more important to Him at that time to step away and pray. Do we make it important to us?

My prayer this week is that I will seize opportunities to spend time with the Holy God that deserves so much more than just a little bit of my time.

Reaching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying, "I am willing; be made clean," and immediately the leprosy left him. Then He ordered him to tell no one: "But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses commanded for your cleansing as a testimony to them." But the news about Him spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. Yet He often withdrew to deserted places and prayed. -Luke 5:13-16
