Treasures in Heaven
Dad was always interested in the price of silver as he thought it may one day hold its value better than the US Dollar. One thing he bought each year though, regardless of the price, was a roll of uncirculated Silver Eagle coins. One Troy Ounce of .999 pure silver. He gave them as birthday gifts to immediate family members. Some of us older folks now have a decent sized stack.
Although I love my coins and now plan to buy my own each year in remembrance of something Dad started years ago, I’m also reminded that no matter how many treasures we have on earth, it’s the ones in heaven that matter the most. Jesus speaks of this in Matthew 6 as part of the Sermon on the Mount. Then in Acts 3, Peter tells the lame beggar that what he has to offer him is far better than silver or gold. These are just two biblical examples that speak of the overall insignificance of wealth and things we consider to be important.
Are you striving for things that can lose their value, be destroyed, or be stolen? Are you living sacrificially for the cause of Christ? My prayer this week is that I focus less on the things of this world, and more on those that are eternal.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." -Matthew 6:19-21
Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Then Peter said, "Silver and Gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." ..... SPEAKING TO THOSE WHO WERE ASTONISHED..... "By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through Him that has completely healed him, as you all can see." -Acts 3:2-6, 16
