Technical Difficulties
Joseph is on the rotating schedule to work the sound booth at church. I fill in sometimes and usually sit with him when it’s his turn. It never hurts to have two sets of eyes and ears on things. Especially when things get complicated.
The sound booth volunteers, and the worship team arrive early each Sunday and practice on Wednesdays to prepare for service. This is the time when you hope all of the kinks are worked out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen that way.
One Sunday shortly before service, I walked in the door and heard a high-pitched sound coming from one of the monitors. The odd thing was that it didn't happen during practice, but it decided to speak up and be heard just as everyone was entering the sanctuary. The issue was quickly tended to and the service soon started. A few minutes later, someone watching the live stream messaged that there was no sound online. The batteries had died in the live stream microphone. A fresh set was put in and we were up and running again. Then, as the music wrapped up and preaching began, the new batteries in the pastor's wireless microphone died as well. It was a morning full of technical difficulties.
A few weeks ago, there were no major hiccups during the service or on the live stream. However, the recording would only play back in fast forward motion. Those of us that saw it joked about how fast Bro. Carl was preaching and how the musicians must have been awfully tired from playing their instruments so fast.
Isn’t that life? There are times when we do everything possible to prepare for something ahead of time and no matter how much effort we put into it, things still go wrong. Isn't it wonderful that our salvation doesn't depend on our efforts?
Today, I'm thankful for grace. It's by that grace and my faith in Jesus Christ that I know who holds tomorrow. When all of my efforts fail, He never does.
For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. -Ephesians 2: 8-10
On a side note: Remember to thank your church musicians and sound team. They put in more time than what you see on Sunday morning.
