Serving with Enthusiasm

This past weekend, our church took a group of thirteen to work in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Processing Center near Dallas, Texas. Some in the group had been before, but for many this was a first-time experience, and it was the first time I ever remember arriving at opening time. Although I’ve always felt welcomed and appreciated by the staff, the coaches are normally busy supervising their workstations when I get there.  This time was a little different.

Coaches are easy to spot in their bright yellow shirts. They are volunteers that have committed to at least one week of service. Their job is to explain the process, supervise the work, and be there for assistance.  However, at 9:00am, their duty was welcoming the groups of volunteers coming through the door.  We were greeted by shoebox costumes, waving hands, cheers, and cowbells. Most of all, everyone was smiling. Their joy was evident, and they were genuinely happy to see us.

Throughout the day, we met people that had come from all over for one purpose... Serve the Lord.  We met a group in our hotel from Louisiana. They were all wearing LSU purple and we thought surely there must be a ballgame nearby, only to find out that they were there to process shoeboxes too.  We also worked side by side with some that came from California and Pennsylvania.  Many people had traveled many miles to serve, and everyone was happy to do it.

Are you enthusiastic about your service?  When others see you working for the Lord, can they tell that you're happy to do it?  Whether you're packing or processing shoeboxes, teaching a class, cooking meals, or any other service you're called to do, make sure that those around you go away feeling like we did... Impressed by the joy we felt from others around us.

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.  - Romans 12:11 NLT
