Skipping Christmas
My favorite Christmas movie is Christmas with the Kranks. It's based on the John Grisham book Skipping Christmas. The comedy stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis who plan to skip all of the holiday festivities and spend the money saved on gifts and parties on a cruise for themselves instead. This doesn't sit well with some of their friends and neighbors as they are now considered the Scrooges of the neighborhood.
While I have no desire to take a cruise and I don't have an issue buying gifts for those in my circle, I have had a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year. The thought of putting up a tree and wrapping gifts hasn't been very appealing to me. I wondered if I was the only one feeling this way but have since heard others say they aren’t feeling very festive this year either.
Holidays can be hard. Many are missing their loved ones at this special time and many are struggling with the economy and wondering how they'll provide for their children on Christmas day. The joy portrayed in TV ads and Hallmark movies isn't always reality and commercialization has caused many to lose touch with the reason for the season.
A few days ago, I felt very convicted. I was reminded that Christmas isn't about me or how I feel. It's about family, friends, and loved ones coming together to recognize the birth of a Savior who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died for our sins, rose on the third day, ascended to heaven, and will come back again for those who believe on Him. So, I put up a small Christmas tree, hung a few decorations, and started wrapping gifts. It's going to be a great day to celebrate the birth of our Lord!
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. -Luke 2:11
