Where the Fish Are
As the weather warms up, we see more and more people outdoors. Gardens are being prepared, softball season has started, ATV riders are abundant, and boats are taking to the water. On Saturday morning as I drove across Delaware Bay, I couldn't help but notice the many large bright colored boats visible from the highway. Lake Dardanelle is over 34,000 acres yet many of the boats were concentrated in this one area. I guess that’s where they thought the fish were.
In Matthew 4, Jesus calls his first disciples. He sees Peter and Andrew casting their nets and he calls to them saying to follow him and he would make them Fishers of Men. What this means for us is that we should be encouraged to share our faith and invite others to learn more about the message of the Gospel. But where will we find people to share that message with? Those that we attend church with should hear it on a regular basis.
Our Student Pastor, Lance, has said many times that he believes it's important for us to be involved in the community and going to places where people are gathered. That doesn't mean that we have to go hang out on Bourbon or Beale Street. We should use wisdom and never do something that goes against our convictions. However, there are many opportunities to reach people in areas that they congregate during the spring and summer seasons. We should be intentional about using our surroundings as tools for the kingdom.
Lord, help me to look for opportunities to meet people where they are and to be bold about sharing my faith with those who need to hear it.
While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is
called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they
were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you
fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And
going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee
and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their
nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father
and followed him. -Matthew 4:18-22
