Waiting Is Hard

Rusty was finally released from the hospital on Thursday. He's doing well and hopefully on the right track now. The fall was a blessing in disguise because it confirmed suspicions that the wound was not healing as it should on the inside. There was an underlying infection that had to be tended to. Cultures were taken that required a waiting period to read the results. There was nothing that could be done to speed up the process. It was just a waiting game.

Sometimes, there are situations where we have no choice but to wait. Then there are times when we do have a choice and we move on too quickly on our own when we should have waited.

In 1 Samuel 13, we read of King Saul as he was going into battle against the Philistines. He had been instructed to wait for Samuel to come and offer the sacrifice. When Samuel had not yet arrived, Saul became anxious and took it upon himself to do the sacrifice. Saul's actions were not taken lightly... “You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord's command.” Although Saul may have thought he was doing the right thing, taking matters into his own hands cost him the kingship.

In Psalm and Isaiah, we learn that waiting on the Lord is where we gain our strength. Waiting is not easy whether we have a choice in the matter or not. My prayer today is that I remember that we gain strength when we wait and that I always trust the Lord to take control of situations rather than try to handle them on my own.

Wait for the Lordbe strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! -Psalm 27:14

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. -Isaiah 40:31
