Do You See What I See?

Last week, I went to see a friend.  On my way inside, I noticed that although it was mid February, there was a Merry Christmas flag in the flower bed.  I started to pick on her about it, but decided not to give her a hard time. Yesterday, Rusty and I were headed out the door to church when I looked over and happened to notice that I still had a metal nativity scene in my own flower bed. I mentioned to Rusty that even though I walk past it every day, I hadn't realized that it was still there and I should probably put it up. His response was..."Yeah, I was wondering about that."  Have you ever noticed something going on with someone else only to later discover that you had something just as bad or worse going on in your own life?
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses the importance of making sure we look at ourselves before we look at others. Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? He goes on to say that people who do such a thing are hypocrites. That's a pretty serious character flaw!

Self-reflection is a great way to keep our spiritual condition in check. By having our eyes clear and focused on Jesus, we will be less likely to seek fault in others.

My prayer this week is that I keep my eyes set on Christ and remember to always  search myself first. I have enough faults of my own to keep me plenty busy.

Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye? Hypocrite! First take the beam of wood out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s eye. -Matthew 7:3-5
