My Pot Runneth Over

We drink lots of coffee at our house and we like it fresh, so we make it several times a day. Usually, it's add some grounds, pour out the old, rinse the pot, fill it with water, and pour into the coffee maker. Sounds pretty simple, right?  But after a recent repair to our water meter caused us to use bottled water for a while rather than tap, my whole routine was thrown off.

I had just started a fresh pot of coffee and patiently waited for the three beeps of the Cuisinart to let me know it was ready. What I found when I entered the kitchen was much more than a fresh pot of coffee. There was a huge puddle of the hot brown liquid in the floor and running across the kitchen counter.  I quickly cleaned up the mess, but was baffled by what could have caused the overflow. I wish I could say this was the only time the incident happened, but it wasn't until it happened again a few days later that I realized my mistake.  I had never poured out the old coffee.  Instead, I was just adding fresh water to the side of the coffee maker and turning it on.  The appliance was doing its job as intended, but I didn't leave room for the fresh coffee it was trying to make.

I laughed when I told Rusty, "My pot runneth over!" But as I thought of the familiar Psalm of David that the phrase reminded me of, I wondered how often the Lord has blessings that He is trying to pour out on us, but we don't take the time to empty ourselves and make room for what He has in store.

My prayer this week is that I will empty myself of things that I like to hold onto but need to let go of and make room for the blessings the Shepherd has for me.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness. For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord. Forever. -Psalm 23
