Are You Well?

Horatio Spafford was a prominent lawyer in Chicago in the 1800s. He lost his only son to scarlet fever and lost many real estate holdings in the Great Chicago Fire shortly after. Needing to distance himself from the tragedies, he booked a trip to England for his family. As they were getting ready to leave, a business proposition called Spafford away. Not wanting to disappoint his wife and four daughters, he told them to go ahead without him and he would follow soon behind. A few days later, he received news that the ship they were on had sank and the only surviving member of his family was his wife. Spafford took the next ship out and had to cross the very place that his daughters had died. Upon doing so, he went to his cabin and wrote the lyrics to the song we all now know as… It Is Well with My Soul

Spafford was a devout Christian man but still suffered times of deep grief and absolute despair. However, he chose to rely on the only One who could sustain him during his darkest times. Since 1873, the song has been sung more times than anyone can count, bringing hope to those who know Christ.

If you’re reading this, I pray that you can also say it is well with your soul and that you always remember it is because He lives that we may live also. If not, I pray that you will seek the Lord as He’s the only One that can truly make us well.

So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, “Look, there is the Shunammite. Run at once to meet her and say to her, ‘Is all well with you? Is all well with your husband? Is all well with the child?’” And she answered, “All is well.” - 2 Kings 4:25-26
