How Deep Is the Well?
A few years ago, a piece of property at the end of my lane came up for sale. Dad was immediately interested in it. In one area, under the branches of several cedar trees, was a small piece of pipe sticking out of the ground. No one seemed to know why it was there. We dug around in the pile of limbs and leaves and found nothing but the small pipe and it was left a mystery. Dad purchased the property and not much else was thought of it.
One day after he passed away, Rusty and I were riding on the UTV and noticed that something looked odd in that area. We got out and pushed some of the brush out of the way and there underneath it all was the top of a well casing. It had been there all along. I desperately wanted to call my Dad and tell him what we had found.
A few days later, we measured the depth to make sure it had water and to prepare to put in a hand pump. The hard work of drilling a well had already been done for us, so it seemed wasteful not to put it to use.
I was reminded of a scripture from Proverbs, the book where we find much wisdom. The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. -Proverbs 20:5
There are two popular interpretations of this scripture. One is that the person with the deep well or water is someone being counseled and the one drawing it out is a counselor that can get to the bottom of feelings or issues. Then there is the interpretation that the one with the deep well or water is a wise person who doesn’t easily give their opinion but is someone that we can seek for counsel and draw wisdom from. Either way, the takeaway for me is the same. We need to be very careful whose well we draw from. Whether that be our own or someone else’s. We should always examine our own motives and those that we seek advice from to make sure that they line up with scripture. Most of all, we should remember that God sent His son to be among many things… our Wonderful Counselor. -Isaiah 9:6. He is the one that we should seek first in all things.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…. -Psalm 1:1
The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. -Proverbs 12:26
