Clear & Present Danger

This weekend, the Rymer family came from Mississippi to visit. As always, my friend Sonya is ready and willing to help me with any task that needs tending to while she's here.  I told her that I had accumulated a scrap metal pile in the back and had planned to haul it off. Since I’m terrified of snakes, we thought it would be a good idea to push the metal out in the open with the tractor to make it easier to get to and scatter any unwanted critters.  I pushed around for a while but was having a hard time getting the heavy pile to move. I eventually threw the tractor in 4-wheel drive and pressed hard on the throttle. Nothing was going to stop me now... that metal was going to move!  As the pile began to shift and I lifted some of it with the bucket, something caught my eye. It had white stripes, and it was moving. Actually, they were moving.  It only took a split second to realize that I had disturbed a skunk den! If the sight didn’t alarm me, the faint warning spray did.  Never in my life have I shifted gears so fast.  As I mashed the clutch and grabbed the gear stick to throw it in reverse, I also yelled to Sonya who was standing nearby.  Run!!!  Skunks!!!  She couldn’t hear me over the roar of the motor, but she could tell by the look on my face that something was terribly wrong.  After I cleared the area, I filled her in on the disruption. I was thankful that I had to tell her what the problem was and that she didn't know automatically by my smell.

It was obvious that I had been in jeopardy of being sprayed and while getting myself out of harm's way was definitely at the top of my list, I also made sure to warn my friend as well. I knew the danger was there and I didn't want her to find out what I was fleeing from the hard way. If you knew someone was headed for potential harm, would you warn them?

As Christians, we know there will be consequences for those who die without a relationship with Jesus.  Although we may have our own affairs in order, are we doing all that we can to warn others about a life without Him?

My prayer today is that I make it a top priority to share about Jesus with those I come in contact with.

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation." -Mark 16:15

"Preach the word, be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction." -2 Timothy 4:2
