There’s No Shoes Like Man Shoes

I got these shoes off of a clearance rack in Dallas recently. I didn’t necessarily need another pair, but $20 for Ariats was a no-brainer. Since my knee is in such bad shape, I always have to be very careful of what kind of shoes I wear. If not, I won’t be able to walk the next day and the older I get, comfort also becomes a top priority. 

Several years ago, when I showed my mom a pair of shoes I had purchased. She told me they were nice but looked a little manly. Since then, the family joke has been… Julie wears man shoes. We’ve had too many laughs through the years, and I just received a pair of shoes from my sister for Christmas with a note on the outside of the box saying, “I hope they’re manly enough”. Lol 

Imagine how happy I was when Hey Dudes and the like became popular a few years ago. I remember sitting in a hospital waiting room with several family members one day when I took notice that everyone in the room was wearing the same style shoe. I didn’t miss the opportunity to point out that everyone in the room was wearing man shoes! 

                               

We all love to be comfortable and will do anything we can to make sure we stay that way, but there are times in life when we face circumstances that are anything but comfortable. We may even wonder why we have to endure these very uncomfortable and trying times. While I don't pretend to have all the answers, I think the Apostle Paul sums it up pretty nicely here:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. -2 Corinthians 2:3-4, 

Did you catch that? Verse 3 reminds us that comfort for our afflictions comes from God, but verse 4 tells us why... So that we may comfort others as we were comforted. 

My prayer this week is that I will remember to seek God during the uncomfortable times of life, not only for my sake but also for the sake of others.

  Thursday was Rusty’s birthday. We had just returned from MD Anderson the day before and were waiting on final recommendations. Thankfully, the cancer had not spread to his lungs, but it was confirmed to be in his foot again. I received a call from his oncologist that the surgeon recommends a below the knee amputation. It’s not the news anyone wants to hear, especially on their birthday. But considering the alternative, we were still very thankful that it was only in his foot.  We don’t know when or where the surgery will take place yet. Only that amputation is the recommended course of action. For anyone, this would be a life-changing event. For Rusty, it will be a major adaptation. For 13 years, he has worked a schedule of 13 days on and 1 day off pretty consistently.  I woke up yesterday morning with the song Fires  on my mind. Thank God

  Early last week, Rusty had an oncologist visit to review a recent Chest CT. These are done periodically to check his lungs since that’s the first place sarcoma likes to go. Everything still looked good. It seems the amputation has done its job at removing the cancer before it had time to spread.  On Friday, he finally had the surgeon’s visit he’s been waiting on for months. He was released to start the prosthetic process. It’s been a long road to get him where he is right now. It will still be a while before his new leg is complete, he’s able to walk on his own, and then eventually go back to work, but we’re finally headed in the right direction.  Thank you to everyone that has visited, called, texted, given us money, and most of all…prayed. We thank you all and we Thank God. Here We Go Again

  If at first you don’t succeed… Rusty’s wound hasn’t healed like they want.  He’s having another procedure later today to debride and reclose. He’s doing good over all and getting around well. Prayers for a successful surgery are appreciated.
